Vera

Vera is an almost 50 year old Skäreläja from Marstrand, Sweden. Most probably built in 1971 and one of the earlier ones. Some details also proves it's the De Luxe version as many details are in wood and the doors to the cabin has glas. Also, there's a front window inside the cabin which in later models was removed as it was very hard to put a window in a shape form.

This summer our old engine, a Volvo Penta, MD17C (35 horsepower, 1981) boiled and broke down. As the engine anyway had to be repaired we took the decision to change it to a new one. After some research we found a new Volvo Penta D2-40 (four cylinders and 40 horsepower).

And once again we're seaborn! Because of the COVID-19 situation, our Captain Keijo did all the work himself! The crew embarked later in the evening, with lots of joy!

The Tiller

There's two ways to control the Skäreläja; either "inside" the pilothouse  or in the stern. And if you steer the boat from the stern, you need a tiller. When our boat arrived from Sweden we had a provisional solution for the summer (of 2012) and a piece of oak... That provisional solution have been in the boat till this summer when I finally realized and accepted, the new tiller would not be done with magic. I have to do it myself. And even if I'm not a real woodworker the result turned out to be better than I hoped for!

Bring it on, father Winter!

Yesterday was a sad day. The summer is official over. Winter is coming. The boat is now up and covered, engine is preserved with glycol. We're ready for the winter.        The first years it took a weekend, two days, to build the structure and cover the boat. Yesterday we did it in less than six hours. We have begun to get the routine.
